The RedMen Never Give Up: Review of the First Leg Semi-Final

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

Boi oh Boi, what a game that was. This match had two phases, nervous at first and joyful at the end as the Men in Red restored parity late in injury time thanks to Super Sylla and his towering header.

The Highlanders created the first chance of the match when Ashu-tough Mehta sent in a quality delivery but it fell to Suhair, who wasn't expecting it as Machado went for the header. The Mariners' star man Roy Krishna controlled the ball swiftly but Dazzling Dylan kept him at check and his shot found the side netting.

But, we went a goal down in the 34th minute as a long ball from Javi found Krishna who assisted his mate David Williams for the opener just after the drinks break. Ashu Bhai came close to settle things before half-time following a King Gallego free-kick but his header hit the crossbar.

Gallego stepped up to handle the dead ball situation but despite coming close on many occasions we were yet so far as Khalid Jamil's men couldn't capitalize on those opportunities.

Magical Machado won the ball against Javi and passed it to Gallego in the blink of an eye who started a counter but Carl McHugh did not let his through ball find Sylla as he made an important interception from the Mariners' point of view.

Well, our Eastern neighbors must have thought they are sealing yet another 0-1 victory but then came the moment when Khalid Jamil finally kissed the ground as he always does when his side scores as our Guinean target man headed past Arindam an all-important equalizer in the 94th minute and brought Northeast United back on level terms.

Hero of the Match: Gurjinder Kumar

Gurjinder Paaji gave it all on the pitch and produced a Hero-of-the-match shift against the Mariners. He was solid defensively as he made two blocks, two successful tackles, and also an interception.
